Icons were hidden in various places in the Byzantine Empire during the period when the population was divided over the problem of whether icons should be used or not. Iconophiles tried to protect the icons which were destroyed. Icons were hidden for a long period, their place forgotten until some day they were discovered accidentally. Often on this place a church was build. Cyprus has a large number and type of churches and monasteries (including ancient Temples).
